The Doctor of Philosophy in Human Bioenergetics trains students in basic and applied research addressing human health and disease.  We have extramurally funded faculty that work collaboratively to conduct research ranging from cell and molecular to organismal adaptations to aging, chronic disease, diet, and exercise. Our research employs cell culture, proteomics, metabolomics, and animal models of human disease; as well as, techniques in biomechanics/neurophysiology and integrative physiology in healthy, pre-clinical, and clinical human populations. Typical completion of the doctorate is within four years. A strong science background in a related field and a commitment to research is required. Admission into the program is dependent upon a commitment from a faculty mentor, thus, applicants must make contact with a faculty member to determine mutual interest and available support prior to formally applying.  Funding opportunities are available to all admitted students.

Graduate programs in sport and exercise science provide an opportunity to go into greater depth in the study of exercise science, pedagogy, and sport administration. Facilities for biomechanics include a motion analysis system for three-dimensional data acquisition and computerized data reduction to determine the mechanical parameters of total body motion. In exercise science, UNC developed the Rocky Mountain Cancer Rehabilitation Institute, one of the first programs of its kind in the United States. In addition, laboratory equipment is also available for motor learning and motor control research. UNC’s Sport Marketing Research Institute conducts marketing and sport industry research. In UNC doctoral programs, both theory and professional applications are emphasized. The doctoral program seeks to develop critical thinkers with the conceptual and methodological tools for conducting meaningful research, and prepares individuals to teach courses at the college level and assume leadership positions in their respective disciplines
