NAK and AKA collaborate to form new journal - Kinesiology Review

In collaboration with Human Kinetics, the National Academy of Kinesiology (NAK) and the American Kinesiology Association (AKA) have formed a partnership to launch a new journal, Kinesiology Review, which will be the official journal of both organizations. We are pleased to announce that Jane Clark (NAK Fellow #348), University of Maryland, will be the founding editor of Kinesiology Review and serve a 3-year appointment. Kinesiology Review will be published quarterly in February, May, August, and November.

The primary audience for Kinesiology Review is individuals who study and teach kinesiology in higher education, including the varied biological, social, psychological, behavioral, historical, and philosophical sub-disciplines that define the field, as well as professionals who utilize knowledge about physical activity in providing their services. A third audience includes faculty and students in other disciplines and professions that have an interest in determinants and outcomes of physical activity behavior in its various forms.

The journal’s primary mission is to publish scholarly reviews of kinesiology research and its applications. Review papers may focus on topics within and across kinesiology sub-disciplines, utilizing meta-analytic and narrative review formats. Kinesiology Review will also publish theoretical papers, critical analyses of significant issues, and position papers pertinent to kinesiology. Some issues of the journal will be thematic with invited reviews followed by evaluative commentaries. Other issues will be non-thematic, publishing unsolicited papers which scholars from around the world are encouraged to submit. The first issue of each year will consist of the Academy Papers, which contain reviews and commentary on timely issues in kinesiology that were presented at the National Academy of Kinesiology annual meeting.

More information will be forthcoming as the editorial board is finalized and plans are formulated for soliciting papers, identifying thematic issues, and getting the journal launched in 2012. This is a very exciting venture for NAK, AKA, and HK, as well as for the entire field of kinesiology, and we look forward to a long and thriving future for the journal.

Maureen Weiss (Fellow #360)

President, NAK
